New Media and Advertising

 New Media and Advertising-

Advertising is a kind of marketing communication which persuades the audience to buy a product or an idea.  Traditional means of advertising include television commercials, print ads, outdoor ads etc. However the traditional means of advertising have now been replaced by new media advertisements. Today most of the advertising is done through new media like internet online ads, web ads, pop up ads, interactive ads etc. Advertising through new media is in demand today. It is cheaper as compared to traditional means of advertising and also reaches a larger audience in a short duration of time.
New media today is growing at a massive rate. The most popular way of advertising today through new media is through cell phones. Cell phones or mobile phones are being preffered for advertising today as it is with the person almost all the time and thus in many ways is the most effective way of  persuading a potential consumer.
Another way of advertising through new media is testimonial advertising which happens on social networking sites like twitter. In this type of advertising a person who has a large number of followers is paid by an advertising agency to give a testimony of their product or keep sharing posts about it which gets advertised to his/her followers. This is a very subtle but intelligent advertising using new media.

There are many such innovative strategies that the advertising agencies are coming up with to advertise their product in the most effective possible way.
Advertisers today are making use of the technology of new media in a very intelligent way to advertise their product or brand in a global way. Today majority of the urban people in India have a cell phone or are regular internet users. So, advertising using new media turns out to be very effective for this kind of target audience.
However for the rural audience of India, new media is not very effective for advertising. Rural areas where technology of new media hasn’t reached yet, new media cannot be used to advertise products or brands. For this kind of target audience, traditional means of advertising, that is, print advertising or television commercials or outdoor advertising still continues to be the better choice as compared to advertising through new media.
New media advertising thus can be said to be limited to the urban area’s target audiences. It is indeed a challenge before new media and advertising agencies to come up with a solution so that they can advertise products or goods to the rural audience using new media.

New media promotes cultural exchange and facilitates to connect with people all over the world. New media has indeed opened up many opportunities in the worlds of Public Relations, Journalism and Advertising as well. It has made it easy for the world to communicate, interact, share their ideas, opinions, thoughts and also advertise their product or a brand to a larger audience in a cost effective way. The wonders of new media are endless. The important thing is to make use of new media in an effective and responsible way.

Advantages and Disadvantages of New Media

Advantages and Disadvantages of new media-

As discussed in the earlier blog, new media is a double edged sword which needs to be handled in a smart way with caution and responsibility.
The power of new media is immense and so are the advantages. New media has given an opportunity to people to interact across the globe. It has given aspiring artists to showcase their talents across the globe using the internet. Many short film makers, musicians, dancers etc can exhibit their art and talent to the whole world. It has given a platform to them to showcase their talent. New media has given many entrepreneurs and business people to expand their business, ideas and creativity all across the world and not restrict it within the boundaries of their nation. This has encouraged innovation and the exchange of ideas has led to intellectual growth. Today students all over the world can discuss topics, give feedback and share their knowledge because of new media.
The applications on smart phones are an interesting thing to look into when we talk about new media. The application world on smart phones is growing almost every single day. If a person wants to try out a new restaurant, he can go to food applications and read the customer reviews before finalizing a place. Today a person sitting in one part of the world can try cooking an authentic cuisine and be successful at it because of the convergence of sound, images and digital technologies which are all accessible on his own cell phone. All this would have seemed impossible few years back, but new media has opened new doors to creativity and innovation.

On the other hand, new media if not used correctly can lead to a variety of problem. Many argue that there is loss of privacy because of new media. Any kind of information can be circulated within seconds through the various technologies of new media which may not be verified. This can affect the sensitivity of some people and also cause privacy issues. Today because of new media the world has definitely come virtually closer but in reality today people are so busy interacting in the virtual world that they have no time to interact face to face. So new media is making the virtual world come closer but the real world distant. Another issue with new media is that it can sometimes endanger the national security. Important information concerned to the security of a nation can be leaked through new media which can endanger the national security.  When everyone is giving their opinion on issues, there are bound to be clashes which might disturb the national peace and order. The facility to have the power to react on every small issue can prove to be dangerous for the society.
New media is a very useful and powerful development which needs to be handled with sensitivity and intelligence. Sensitive information should be verified before circulating it. The wonders of new media if utilized in a responsible way can generate great opportunities and help the society too.
