What is New Media?

What is new media?

New media is a way of mass communication that utilizes digital technologies like the internet. examples of new media include websites such as online newspapers, blogs, or wikis, video games, and social media. One of the main feature of new media is that it is mostly a two way communication. It allows people to discuss various topics, share things, comment on things and voice their opinions to a large number of people using the power of Internet. Films, television programs are not a part of new media unless they are using some digitally interactive technologies. To put it in simple words, It includes almost everything related to the internet and the interaction between technology, sound and images.
The term old media means newspapers, television set, magazines etc. But today in the new technologically advanced world, communicating ideas has become much easier through ‘new media’
New media has provided people with the opportunity to share their ideas, opinions to a larger audience through websites, blogs, videos, images and other user generated content.
Flew (2002) stated that, "as a result of the evolution of new media technologies, globalization occurs."  Globalization basically means when the activities of a nation go beyond the boundaries of a nation i.e. it goes international.
Interactivity is the core to understand new media but different technologies utilize different levels of interactivity.

New media is evolving extremely fast. There are no standard technologies that can be concluded to be a part of new media. At one point the cell phone was considered a part of new media but today only certain smart phones which have certain applications will be included as new media. Thus new media is growing and developing constantly.
The new media has bought the world closer and it has allowed a lot of interaction which enables us today to get varied point of views on the same topic. New media has also helped us understand various cultures and made communication and cultural exchange possible.
New media is especially important from the business point of view. Today one can publicize their product all across the globe due to new media. There is more content but less of confusing because of new media. For example if there is some false news about a celebrity circulating on twitter, the concerned celebrity can clear his name of the controversy by himself/ herself clarifying and giving first hand information to his/her fans.
Today a breaking news is first disclosed on new media platforms and then on television sets or newspapers. This just explains the immense power that new media posses.
New media has bought about a complete revolution in the the world of global communication. Interactivity, exchange of information, interchange of cultures and ideas is what new media has facilitated. People have become more open to various thoughts and ideas due to new media. Today the youth is addicted and in love with the wonders of new media. They are using it for personal as well as professional purposes. However new media is like a double edged sword which needs to be handled with care, dignity and intelligence.
